Within just minutes of taking to the stand this morning, Harry began by saying that he didn’t complain when the articles were first published by the Daily Mail due to the “institution” he was in.
Anthony White KC, who is representing ANL, asked the duke why he did not complain at the time the articles in question were published.
He put to him: “That is because you believed, at the time time that the articles were published, in so far as you saw them, that the information they contained came from legitimate sources.”
Harry says he would not have been able to complain about them at the time because of the “institution” he was in – and gives the famous phrase often associated with the Royal Family: “Never complain, never explain.”
He said: “To a certain extent, but I would not have been able to complain about them anyway, because of the institution I was in.”
The Duke tells the court that the moment private information came out about him, his “circle of trust” decreased.
He says the kind of information featured in these articles is not information he would have been talking about openly.
