Coastguard helicopters from Prestwick and Dublin were among the emergency services called to an attend a concern for safety report in south Belfast on Wednesday morning.

A large emergency service response saw several fire engines and ambulances called to the scene.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said that it dispatched three specialist rescue teams alongside three fire engines after receiving a call just before 7am.

“Firefighters were called to reports of a water rescue at Ormeau Bridge, Belfast,” a spokesperson said.

“Firefighters, along with other emergency services, carried out a search and no persons were located in the vicinity of the area.

“The incident was handed over to the PSNI and firefighters left the scene at 9.36am.”

A coastguard spokesperson said that they were called to attend an incident near Belfast today at around 7.30am.

They said that a coastguard helicopter from Prestwick and an Irish coastguard helicopter from Dublin were tasked to the scene.

Lane closures on the Ormeau Bridge saw traffic disruption during morning rush-hour as only one lane remained open on each side of the road.

Police had advised that road users should expect delays at around 7.40am, with the lane closures lifted just before 9am.
