It’s the third week in a row in which the price of oil, the dominant heating fuel in Northern Ireland, has dropped.

According to the NI Consumer Council’s weekly home heating oil price checker on Thursday, the average price in Northern Ireland for 300 litres is now £188.69, which is down from £192.13 a week earlier.

For 500 litres, the average price is now £290.21, which is down from £294.67.

And for the biggest fill of 900 litres, the average price is now £511.42, down from £517.54.

Prices vary across Northern Ireland district councils, with average costs for home heating oil monitored by the consumer watchdog across the different areas.

The cheapest council area for 300 litres is Mid and East Antrim, where it costs £187.18, £1.51 below the NI average.

For 500 litres of home heating oil, the cheapest area is Antrim and Newtownabbey, where it costs £288.37, £1.84 below the NI average.

Antrim and Newtownabbey is also the cheapest location for 900 litres, costing £509.26, which is £2.16 below the NI average.

The most expensive spot for 300 litres is Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, where it costs £190.81, £2.12 above the NI average.

Nearby Newry, Mourne and Down is the most expensive for 500 litres, at a cost of £292.04, which is £1.83 above average.

Derry City and Strabane is the council area where 900 litres costs most at £514.59, which is £3.17 above average.

According to the NI Consumer Council’s separate fuel price checker for diesel and petrol, there has been another decline in their prices here.

Petrol now costs 124.8p per litre, down from from 125.7p last week.

And diesel is now 132.0p per litre, down from 133.2p last week.

Of the towns monitored by the Consumer Council, Carrickfergus is the cheapest place for petrol at 122.2p per litre, 2.6p below average.

Downpatrick is cheapest for diesel, at 129.9p per litre, which 2.1p below average.

However, diesel is most expensive in Strabane, costing 134.9p per litre, which is 2.9p on average.

And Magherafelt is the most expensive place for petrol, with one litre costing 128.6p, which is 3.7p above the NI average.
