The Royal Family is stripped of all its titles and privileges in the latest production to be staged by Robin Hood Theatre Company.

Sue Townsend’s sharp, satirical play The Queen and I will be performed at the Robin Hood Theatre in Averham next week.

Townsend brings her signature blend of gritty humour and uncompromising dialogue to this 1994 stage adaptation of her novel, which blends sharp social commentary with pure farce.

It explores a Britain where the royal family is unceremoniously dethroned and stripped of all titles, wealth and privilege by a republican government. They are removed from Buckingham Palace and banished to live in reduced circumstances on a Leicester council estate.

The production captures the absurdities and hardships of Elizabeth Windsor and her family as they navigate a life without luxury and, as they stumble through this alien existence, they discover the realities of poverty, class divides, and community spirit.

The Queen and I will run from Tuesday, January 27, to Saturday, January 31.

Tickets are available online from www.RHTC.co.uk

Performances take place nightly at 7.30pm with an additional matinée at 2.30pm on the Saturday.
