LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) – Snow has been falling in southern Kentucky as officials express concerns about snow and ice causing widespread problems.
Emergency and local officials say they are as prepared as they can be for the winter storm. The big question is whether people are staying in their homes as recommended.
Traffic remains steady on Interstate 75 and local roads as the snow continues to accumulate.
Emergency preparations in place
The emergency operations center is active and will remain so throughout the storm. Officials are working to supply resources to the places that need them most.
London officials say they are particularly concerned about ice and losing power. The local community center on Main Street has a new generator that was installed recently and will serve as a shelter if there are widespread power outages.
“So we have the fire department. Most of the emergency services, they have generators on their buildings, so we can continue to provide those services. We felt like that was the most important — the essential services. The community center, again if you have no power, we had to have some way to keep the heat running over there,” said Mayor Randall Weddle.
Safety recommendations
The local emergency management director said they are working with the Red Cross on shelters in other locations.
Officials encourage people to make sure they have flashlights and batteries ready and their cell phones charged.
They also recommend hanging blankets and sheets over windows and setting up in a small inner room if you lose power and have nowhere else to go.
Officials have been urging people to be prepared for the storm conditions.
