Royalty and fashion go hand in hand, but it’s surprising that five years after returning to the U.S., Meghan Markle hasn’t attended the Met Gala

The theme this year is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Attendees are supposed to adhere to the dress code, “Tailored for You” and this could be the perfect way for the Duchess of Sussex to embrace her new endeavors as a lifestyle guru.

While members of the royal family have attended the Met Gala in the past — notably Princess Diana in 1996 and Princess Beatrice in 2018 — Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, have yet to step out onto the red carpet for fashion’s biggest night.

Is Meghan Markle going to the Met Gala this year?

So far, there is no word that Meghan is attending the 2025 gala, but Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour admitted she had a long-term goal in mind. “I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together. That would be my dream couple,” Wintour revealed on Today in 2019, long before the royal rift. “They can leave their husbands at home. It’s the two of them that I want.”

While the royal women appear to have an open invite with Wintour, Meghan hasn’t taken the fashionista up on the opportunity. If it was going to happen, 2025 feels like it would be the year. She’s been promoting the launch of As Ever and her new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. The Duchess of Sussex’s high-profile appearances have also ramped up with her Time100 Summit keynote talk. Still, she skipped the evening gala to rush home to her family.

Royal fans want to see Meghan on that red carpet because she recently admitted that she loves to send a message through her wardrobe — and the Met Gala would be the perfect place to do it. She shared on The Jamie Kern Lima Show on April 28 that she leaned into her influence on fashion during her time as a royal. She strategized her wardrobe to “uplift brands that have a great ethos and female founders.”

“You know, there was a long time where…I wasn’t out talking,” Meghan explained. “So, if you couldn’t hear me, how could I be heard through what I was wearing if that was what people were focusing on?”

Could you imagine what she could pull off on the Met Gala red carpet? It makes us hope that Meghan took Wintour up on her offer to appear anytime she wants. For now, we have until Monday, May 5 to find out if Wintour’s wish finally came true.
