Fire crews have been scrambled to a house fire in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Crews were called at around 8.15pm on Saturday, May 3, following reports a large fire had broken out at a semi-detached home on Sheard Avenue.

Residents reported hearing a large bang moments before three fire engines arrived at the scene.

Smallshaw Lane has been cordoned off as firefighters tend to the blaze.

In a video shared with the Manchester Evening News, smoke was seen billowing out of the property as concerned neighbours watched on.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just after 8.15pm on Saturday (May 3) three fire engines from Ashton, Stalybridge and Mossley fire stations were called to a fire at a semi-detached home on Sheard Avenue, Ashton-under-Lyne.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire. Crews remain in attendance with a cordon in place to make the surrounding area safe.”
