An Edinburgh man entertained viewers with his humorous quips during an appearance on The Chase.

Despite Mathew, a cabin crew law graduate, initially winning over some fans of the show with his bubbly personality, he managed to later divide opinion after taking the low offer of £1,000. Choosing a charm offensive, Mathew started off by calling host Bradley Walsh “a gorgeous young man.”

Bradley took the comment in his stride, joking back that the Scot could proceed to the final before answering a question. He fared relatively well in the cash builder gaining £6,000.

But sadly his confidence did not last long as he opted to take the low offer of £1,000 that was tabled by Shaun Wallace, the Dark Destroyer. Potentially attempting to put The Chaser off his game, Mathew tried to charm the TV star by opening with “Hello gorgeous” which left the studio in stitches.

The 26-year-old was able to make it through with two questions to spare after the Dark Destroyer answered a couple of questions incorrectly. Sadly he was to be joined in the final by one other contestant, Shenagh from Chesterfield, who brought £5,000 back to the team.

Impressive Becci from Ashford went for the £7,000 offer but was sadly caught. Meanwhile Toby from Eastbourne opted for the £84,000 before he was defeated by The Chaser.

The pair put up an admirable fight securing a cushion of 12 in the final but they were hunted down with 15 seconds to go. Viewers flocked to X to share their opinions on the Edinburgh contestant.

One person said: “Mathew’s hilarious. Glad he’s still in.” Another added: “Mathew is so funny.”

Meanwhile another said: “This has to be some sort of wind up! Seat two who has been very annoying, takes the £1K Low Offer with Seat four gleefully suggesting him to do so! ITV are going to lose viewers if this is the nonsense they are producing! The Chase has gone down the toilet!”

Whereas a viewer felt let down by Mathew taking the low offer, adding: “Liked you till that point, Matthew.”

Mathew described the experience “as a beautiful wee day.”
