Steven Gerrard has admitted he’s “devastated” that Liverpool decided against making a move for Marc Guehi in the January transfer window.
The Reds came perilously close to signing Guehi in the summer, with the defender having started his medical on deadline day before Crystal Palace pulled the plug, despite a £35 million ($48M) deal being agreed.
Although Palace then opened the door again earlier this month, Liverpool decided against revisiting its interest, with Guehi instead joining Manchester City for £20M ($28M), which the Reds deemed to not be as big an opportunity compared to picking him up for free in the summer.

That decision though is looking costlier by the day, with Liverpool’s options in defense running desperately low at the moment.
Joe Gomez is the latest player to have picked up an injury, joining Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley on the sidelines, while Ibrahima Konate remains away following the death of his father.
The lack of options has led to Ryan Gravenberch having to line up alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the back four for the Champions League clash against Qarabag, with no word yet on when exactly Gomez or Konate will return.

As such, Liverpool legend Gerrard believes his old club missed a trick in not making a move for Guehi this month, and feels he will make City stronger.
Giving his thoughts on City, Gerrard told TNT Sports: “I think recent signings in January will bolster the squad. We were just speaking about how good of a signing Semenyo was and Marc Guehi, the importance of them.

“I was devastated that he never came to Liverpool in all honesty, because we’ve had some defensive issues from that point of view. I think that will really help them [City] and boost them.”
Despite the ongoing injury problems his side is suffering, Arne Slot has indicated that he doesn’t expect any major signings before the window closes on February 2.
“As I always say, if there’s an opportunity in the market, or if we think we can strengthen the squad, then this club will always try to do so, but at this moment in time, I expect it to stay mainly the same,” Slot said last week.
