As the opening of the new £32m super tip draws nearer we take a look at the ‘state-of-the-art’ facility dubbed the ‘biggest in Europe’.
The Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station in Aldridge is set to open on Monday, February 2.
Councillor Suky Samra, portfolio holder for clean and green at Walsall Council, said the new facility on Middlemore Lane will ‘modernise waste services across the borough’.

Leader of the authority, Councillor Mike Bird, acknowledged concerns raised by local residents about overspill onto the surrounding road network, but was ‘confident’ that the sheer size of the facility would prevent this.
Located at the former McKennie Brass site, the new super tip has holding capacity for more than 140 vehicles.
Councillor Samra said: “This facility represents a major step forward in modernising waste services across the borough, making recycling easier, more efficient and more sustainable for our residents.
“This facility has been designed with residents and the environment in mind.
“Not only will it allow us to separate and process more waste effectively but it will also help reduce landfill, encourage reuse and support Walsall’s wider sustainability and carbon reduction goals.
“This site is a real example of practical action of a greener and cleaner Walsall.”
Councillor Bird said: “Waste touches everyone’s life, once a week when it’s collected, and in some parts of the country that doesn’t happen. Our relationship with our bins crews and our residents is testament to the success of what we’re seeing today.”

Kathryn Moreton, director of environment, added: “I’m incredibly proud of the team. It’s years of hard work that has come together with some great partners to create a really exciting facility for Walsall.”
Construction for the super tip began in August 2024 and was completed just 12 months later.
The council had been awaiting an operational permit from the Environment Agency before opening to the public.
Also on site is a dedicated reuse shop which will give life to items that might otherwise have been thrown away.
Staff will be able to upcycle and repair items at the workshop, to prepare furniture and household goods into safe and usable condition to be sold at a low cost to residents.
The existing tip on Merchants Way, situated approximately half a mile from Middlemore Lane, will cease operations from Sunday, February 1.
Fryers Road tip in Bloxwich will remain open to residents ahead of planned redevelopment, details of which are yet to be provided.
The new super tip will be open seven days a week. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday it’ll open 9am – 5pm. On Tuesday between 10am-6pm and on Thursday 9am-4pm.
Proof of residence is required to make use of the site, in the form of a driving licence, recent council tax letter or utility bill.
