AI technologies offer opportunities for efficiency and improvement for businesses, but also introduce risks related to data protection, bias and security.

AI use and technology is continually changing and the council will adapt and explore further use in future – ensuring that opportunities for efficiency and improved customer service are maximised.

West Lothian Council is looking to introduce a policy that sets out guiding principles to ensure all AI usage is ethical and complaint. The council’s draft AI policy will be presented to Council Executive next week seeking approval. The policy will ensure that the  use of AI will be in a manner that provides assurance that the products, services and decisions enabled by AI are safe and secure.

The council’s use of AI must also promote fairness, avoid bias to prevent discrimination and promote equal treatment. All information created by AI will also be reviewed, checked and edited to ensure accuracy prior to use.
