Donald Trump sparked confusion as he abruptly ended an Oval Office announcement, with the media being ordered out of the room.
The US President was signing an executive order to launch a programme of drug recovery support – and which started more than an hour late. It’s almost unheard of for the President to end an event like this without taking questions.
But he did so – and for for the second time today. He also ended his Cabinet Meeting without taking questions a few hours earlier. Trump is known to take questions for an hour or longer at the end of such meetings.
It comes as the Trump’s state of mind has been repeatedly brought into question – and at a time of rising fury over his administration’s invasion of Minneapolis. Between events today, Trump posted and reposted conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, which he lost, dozens of times on Truth Social, leading some to speculate this evening’s press conference would be a related announcement.
Yesterday, the FBI raided the election HQ in Fulton County, Georgia – a key target of Trump’s campaign to overturn the result of the 2020 election.
Trump has been teasing prosecutions over his wild false corruption claims in recent weeks – using the Justice Department to take his revenge on those who refused to let him steal the race, which he lost to Joe Biden.
In a speech last week in Davos, Switzerland he said charges were imminent.
Conspiracy theories about the 2020 election have been the focus of Trump’s Truth Social account today, with the President posting and reposting a string of wild and false claims.
Other topics that could be on the agenda for the meeting include the announcement last night of a new Deputy Attorney General to focus on claims of financial fraud allegedly committed in various Democrat-run states.

There was also speculation he was set to pick a new chair for the US Federal Reserve, although he indicated this afternoon that the name would be announced next week.
Previous similar events have included an announcement about jobs figures, while a more recent announcement related to whole milk.
It was also suggested the announcement would relate to the Trump administration’s ICE invasion of Minnesota, after border czar Tom Homan was assigned to oversee the operation amid rising fury over the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
Georgia has been at the heart of Trump’s obsession with his 2020 election loss.
He infamously called Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on Jan. 2, 2021 – days before the election was certified – asking him to “find” 11,780 more votes for Trump so he could be declared the winner of the state. “All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have,” Trump said. “Because we won the state.” Raffensperger refused, noting that repeated reviews had confirmed Democrat Joe Biden had narrowly won Georgia.
Last night, the FBI served a search warrant at the election headquarters of Fulton County, seeking ballots from the 2020 election.
The warrant says the search was part of a criminal investigation into violations of two federal laws: one about preserving election records and the other about efforts to defraud voters.
The warrant allowed agents to seize physical ballots, voting machine tapes, voter rolls and images taken during the 2020 count.
Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, was spotted at the scene, for reasons which are not yet clear – as her role relates to foreign threats, not domestic law enforcement.
