Neil McIntosh. Editor of the Daily Record.

When I was a boy, coming into Glasgow I always looked out for the giant Daily Record and Sunday Mail offices towering over the Kingston Bridge. One day, I hoped, I might get a chance to work there, writing Scotland’s story and rattling the cages of the powerful. That was the dream.

Because, growing up in Scotland, the Daily Record wasn’t just a newspaper: it was a fixture. It was the paper you trusted to tell you straight. It was what you opened up to see what Scotland, and the world, was up to. It was the paper you always flipped over to see what was going on in the football.

Whether it was down the road, or on the other side of the world, all life was there.

The values have carried on through the years, even as the world changes. Most importantly, it’s always been a paper with backbone. We don’t just report the news; we get stuck in. We’ve always been a voice for the folk who feel they aren’t being heard, a watchdog keeping an eye on the powerful, and a champion for the communities that make Scotland what it is.

As for me… I didn’t quite make it to those offices. They’re putting up flats there now. The Record’s modern home is nearby, though, and while it might not be quite as visible, the journalism really still is. Today, more people read the Record than at any point in our history.

You find us on your phones, in your social feeds, and in your inbox with our newsletters. We are where you are. The mission remains the same, even if the technology has changed.

The way we fund the journalism you trust is changing, too. To keep telling the stories that matter – the ones that hold Scotland’s politicians to account, root out criminals and hypocrites, expose injustice, and celebrate our culture – we are taking the next step in our journey.

Today, I am proud to introduce Daily Record Premium.

Why we are asking you to sign up

You’ll have probably noticed the internet has become a noisy, cluttered place. To keep our news free for everyone, digital sites rely on advertising. It can feel like those ads are getting in the way of the story.

We know that’s frustrating. We also know that in this era of “fake news” and social media echo chambers, trusted, verified journalism has never been more important.

Our reporters live alongside our readers, in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and every corner of Scotland. They do their work in the courts, at the training grounds of our biggest clubs, and in the corridors of Holyrood. But that work costs money. By subscribing to Daily Record Premium, you aren’t just buying a “product” – you are investing in the future of Scottish journalism, and ensuring the news that matters will always find its way to you first.

More than headlines

The Record has always been about more than ink on paper or pixels on a screen. We campaign for change because we care about the places in which we live.

We’ve campaigned against the epidemic of youth violence with the Our Kids… Our Future initiative. We’ve also shone a light on the tragic toll of deaths by suicide in Scotland – it’s the biggest killer of our young people. Our Save Young Lives campaign has already persuaded Scotland’s politicians to take the issue more seriously. Real change is within reach.

We don’t do this to win awards (although we do). We do it because if the Record doesn’t stand up for the ordinary Scot, who will?

We know times are tough. That’s why a lot of our content will remain free – we believe everyone deserves access to the news. But if you value what we do, and if you want to see the Record continue to fight Scotland’s corner, we’re asking for your support.

It’s about more than just a subscription; it’s about being part of a community that believes in honest, gutsy, Scottish journalism, and its power to improve your life.

Thank you for reading, for your loyalty, and for being part of the Record family.

Yours sincerely,

Neil McIntosh
