The latest Droughtlander is almost over, as the eighth and final season of Outlander is just over a month away. With the release of an “emotional” trailer teasing “heartbreaking moments”, the hype cycle is officially reaching fever pitch.

In the trailer, we see that Fraser’s Ridge has become a bustling settlement, while Jamie and Claire have found peace in family life. However, a dark shadow hangs over everything, as war is set to arrive on their doorstep.

Jamie is determined to fight, even though he is destined to die. Will he find a way to avoid his fate, or will the Frasers’ attempts to change the future fail in the same way it has multiple times before?

The dour mood of the trailer seems to imply that it will have a sad ending, but unlike previous seasons, we don’t know where it’s going to go.

Season 8 is based on Diana Gabaldon’s Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone as well as parts of the 10th and final novel in her book series, which hasn’t been published yet.

Back in 2024, Gabaldon stated that the show will end differently to how it will on the page.

“I think people will be OK with it, but it won’t resemble much of Book 10, only because there isn’t room,” she said.

“For Season 8, they have ALL the material from [Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone], a working synopsis of Book 10, and about 3/4 of Book 8 that they haven’t used. That’s a Whole Lot of Stuff to have to cram into 1- hours and have it make any kind of sense.

“So what they’ve done is essentially what they’ve done with the earlier books; pick out specific scenes or storylines, then create a sort of brief framework to tie them together in some more or less logical way.”

Whatever happens, as Starz teased with the release of the new trailer, expect “heartwarming and heartbreaking moments”, and the return of many familiar faces.

Outlander airs on Starz in the US, and streams via MGM+ on Prime Video Channels in the UK. Season 8 premieres on Friday, 6 March.
