Claire Sweeny’s exit from Coronation Street has been confirmed, three years after she made her debut in the role of Cassie Plummer.
The actress, who shot to fame playing Lindsey Corkhill in Channel 4’s defunct soap, Brookside, arrived on the cobbles as Cassie Plummer back in 2023. She arrived as drug user Cassie, and was revealed to be the long-lost mum of Tyrone Dobbs and the estranged daughter of Evelyn Plummer.
Cassie has since made a home for herself in Weatherfield alongside her family, and new love interest Steve McDonald. However, it’s been confirmed that Claire will be waving goodbye to the ITV soap after three years this summer.
The news was confirmed on Thursday (January 29) after it was announced that she will be taking on the role of Miss Hannigan in the upcoming tour of Annie. She will be taking over the role in July from Strictly Come Dancing star La Voix, who will be making her debut when the new tour gets underway in Wimbledon on May 23.
Claire will take on the iconic role from July 7, at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, before heading to Milton Keynes, Blackpool, Newcastle, Dublin, Bristol, Nottingham, Hull, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Truro, Cheltenham, Stoke, Crawley, Belfast, Aberdeen, Woking, Bradford, Oxford, Sunderland, Southampton, Norwich, Wolverhampton, Sheffield, Glasgow and Leicester.

A spokesperson for Coronation Street said: “We wish Claire every success playing Miss Hannigan and congratulate her on being offered a role she has long wanted to play.”
They went on to confirm: “Cassie will be on the cobbles until the summer during which time she will continue to make her presence felt in Weatherfield leading up to a great exit storyline.”
Earlier this month, Claire confirmed she was still filming on Corrie. She took to Instagram and posted a selfie from her dressing room, telling her followers: “Great to be back in work [heart emoji],” to which they were quick to respond in the comments section.
