Tyler Fredricson’s chances of a loan move have been scuppered by injury

A clutch of players could still leave Manchester United before the January transfer window closes at 5pm on Monday, but the chances of any new arrivals at Old Trafford are slim.

United had expected a quiet month and so it has proved, with players returning from injury and Africa Cup of Nations duty to strengthen the first-team squad once again.

A failed bid to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth before the window opened has been the highlight and the £65million that could have gone on that transfer has been saved for the summer window instead.

United insist they would only move in January if a long-term target became available and after Semenyo opted to join Manchester City, that was never likely to happen.

But the final days of the window could still be busy. Two deals set to be confirmed are loan moves for Toby Collyer and Ethan Wheatley. Midfielder Collyer, 22, spent the first half of the season on loan at West Brom before returning to Carrington after picking up an injury. He will spend the second half of the season with Championship side Hull City, who are in fourth and chasing promotion to the Premier League.

Wheatley, 19, was recalled from League Two side Northampton Town earlier this month. The striker scored three goals in 25 appearances and will now move to League One promotion chasers Bradford City for the second half of the campaign.

Centre-back Tyler Fredricson, 20, is set to stay at Old Trafford after picking up a calf injury that will rule him out for a month. He has made four appearances for United, including in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town and the Boxing Day win against Newcastle this season. But the switch to a back four and Harry Maguire’s return from injury has dropped Fredricson down the pecking order.

There was interest from the Championship and Belgium’s top flight in Fredricson but injury means he will now be staying at the club. One centre-back who is set to move is Rhys Bennett, with the 20-year-old in talks over a temporary switch to Fleetwood.

United are hoping to find loan moves for five other players who have returned from loans this month. Habeeb Ogunneye, 20, has trained with the senior squad since returning from League Two Newport County, but could go out again.

Goalkeeper Elhy Harrison is back from a stint at Shrewsbury Town and defenders Louis Jackson and Sonny Aljofree have returned from Notts County and Solihull Moors. Striker Joe Hugill has been recalled from a spell with Barnet. Ogunneye, Harrison, Jackson, Aljofree and Hugill are all available for loan this month but time is running out to secure moves for all of them.

There is still no decision on the future of highly rated midfielder Sekou Kone, 19, who has spent the month training with Swiss side Lausanne-Sport and played in a friendly victory against Neuchâtel Xamax. Lausanne are owned by Ineos so have close links with United, but with the transfer window in Switzerland open until February 16, there is no rush to make a decision.

Any changes to the first-team squad are now unlikely, with Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee set to stay at Old Trafford despite loan interest in them from clubs in Europe.

Left-back Tyrell Malacia could stay at United and see out the final five months of his contract. The 26-year-old has played just two minutes of football this season and he is keen to secure more regular playing time. It is understood he hasn’t given up hope of finding a solution in the final days of the January window.
