Anfield sets the stage for a high-stakes Premier League clash on Saturday night as Liverpool and Newcastle United both look to revive their top-four ambitions. The Reds are still searching for their first league win of 2026, while the Magpies felt the absence of the influential Bruno Guimaraes in last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

Earlier in the 2025-26 campaign, Liverpool gained a reputation for dramatic late winners, but the tables have turned in recent weeks. Their agonizing 3-2 loss to Bournemouth last weekend was a historic low, as they battled back from two goals down only to concede a stoppage-time winner from Amine Adli. Remarkably, Liverpool have now lost three Premier League matches this season to goals scored in the 90th minute or later—more than in any previous campaign.

That painful defeat on the South Coast ended Liverpool’s 13-game unbeaten run and extended their winless streak in the league to five matches, dropping them to sixth in the table. Not since 1954 have Liverpool failed to win any of their first six league fixtures in a calendar year—a season that ultimately saw them relegated. However, Arne Slot’s side found some respite in midweek, thrashing Qarabag 6-0 to secure their spot in the Champions League last 16 and stretching their unbeaten run at Anfield to seven games across all competitions.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have struggled to find consistency, especially in the absence of Guimaraes. Their fears were realized against Aston Villa, as Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins scored to hand the Magpies another defeat at St James’ Park. Since Guimaraes joined in 2022, Newcastle have failed to win any of the nine Premier League matches he hasn’t started. Now winless and goalless in their last two league outings, Eddie Howe’s side have slipped to ninth in the standings, one of four teams on 33 points and five behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

Despite their domestic struggles, Newcastle earned a commendable 1-1 draw away to Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, booking a spot in the knockout round playoffs and extending their unbeaten away run to three matches. However, they have only managed three away wins all season. Their last trip to Anfield ended in a 3-2 defeat, courtesy of Rio Ngumoha’s late strike, marking Newcastle’s 18th consecutive league game without a win against Liverpool. The Magpies have also failed to win in their last 29 Premier League visits to Anfield, underlining the scale of the challenge they face this weekend.
