Casualty star Melanie Hill has revealed Cam Mickelthwaite’s important role in the harrowing new storyline for her character, Siobhan McKenzie. In the latest episode of the soap’s current boxset, ‘Learning Curve’, Siobhan was attacked while walking home at night.

Following a busy shift, Siobhan told Flynn to go home for his daughter’s birthday, saying she would take care of the day’s paperwork.

After working late into the night, she left the hospital and was pushed to the ground by a mysterious stranger. As her screams echoed, the episode ended.

This week, the BBC soap confirmed that the clinical nurse manager would be at the centre of a distressing new sexual assault storyline, with scenes confirming the assault set to air this Saturday (31 January).

In 2024, a storyline explored the sexual abuse that Cam had suffered in his childhood. At the time, Cam confided in Siobhan about this and she was very supportive of him.

Speaking about her new storyline, Hill said that Cam will support Siobhan during her time of need, having been through abuse himself.

Asked how the assault impacts Siobhan and those around her, she said: “In a previous series Siobhan was involved in a storyline with Cam, who came face-to-face with somebody who had abused him very early on in his life.”

“So, he supports Siobhan through this storyline, and obviously he is very protective of her. He treats her like a mother-figure, and Siobhan treats him like a son, so it obviously affects him really badly knowing she’s been through this.”

“I won’t say too much more about that, but he goes above and beyond to help Siobhan in her journey to get through that,” she added.

While Siobhan will soon be entwined with Cam, the character has recently shared a lot of screen-time with Flynn Byron, and Hill paid tribute to co-star Olly Rix as she labelled him a “dream” to work with.

“He’s fantastic to work with and he’s super professional,” she said. “Siobhan and Flynn go on their journey together, and he handles it in a completely different way to Cam, but Siobhan has a lot of support around her. It’s a real rollercoaster.”

Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One and now streams first on BBC iPlayer, where episodes are released at 6am on the day of transmission.
