Birmingham City are set to offload Iceland international Willum Willumsson before the transfer window shutsWillum Willumsson of Birmingham City

Birmingham City midfielder Willum Willumsson is closing in on a move away from the club.

Willumsson missed Blues’ 2-0 victory over Oxford United in the Championship on Saturday.

Chris Davies confirmed in his post-match press conference at the Kassam Stadium that Willumsson is set to complete a transfer before Monday’s 7pm deadline.

Asked whether Willumsson is poised to leave, Davies said: “Very possibly. I don’t know where exactly that is and how much progression that’s taken but yes, that looks likely.”

Dutch side NEC Nijmegen are the team that has been pursuing Willumsson most aggressively over the past week.

Blues signed Willumsson from Go Ahead Eagles 18 months ago and the 27-year-old has a proven track record in the Eredivisie.

Willumsson is the latest in a long line of signings from the summer window of 2024 to head for the exit. Should his move go through, Blues will only have six players left from the 17 they signed in that transfer window.

Blues aren’t expected to replace Willumsson in their squad, instead relying on Kanya Fujimoto — who has only made two brief cameos in the Championship — to provide cover for Marvin Ducksch and Jay Stansfield.
