Jake Paul sent Canelo Alvarez a pointed message on the night that they would have been having a Cinco de Mayo super-fight.

The controversial celebrity boxing star had all but agreed to face Alvarez in Las Vegas on Saturday night. However, that plan was thwarted when at the eleventh hour Turki Alalshikh came in with a four-fight deal that included boxing’s biggest super-fight between he and Terence Crawford.

Before they could get to the Crawford fight, which will be promoted by UFC boss Dana White, the super-middleweight champion had to make a mandatory title defence against William Scull last night in Riyadh. The bout was a record-breaking stinker with the least punches thrown.

Jake Paul mocks Canelo Alvarez after disastrous William Scull fight

Canelo Alvarez and William Scull broke a record for the least amount of punches thrown in a 12-round fight last night as they stumbled through a lack lustre super-middleweight title bout. The fight was the first on a four-show deal for the champion which is set to make him hundreds of millions.

It appeared that Scull was happy to get through the 12 rounds without getting seriously hurt, launching next to no offence. This frustrated Alvarez, who was unable to land much of his own in a particularly lack lustre outing.

Knowing that he would have been the opponent on this weekend had his deal gone through, Jake Paul was a particularly keen onlooker on the night’s fight. He simply tweeted that the show was “embarrassing” to his 4.7million followers.

Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez were due to fight this weekend

While the concept of a Canelo Alvarez and Jake Paul fight may seem far fetched, it was not so out there just a matter of months ago. The pair had all but agreed to compete on this weekend, with the bout set for Las Vegas.

Paul was expected to cut back down to cruiserweight, where Alvarez would weigh in at a career-high, giving up a massive amount of size in order to add intrigue to the bout. Netflix was set to broadcast the show, just as they did the American’s last outing against Mike Tyson.

That fight drew over 120million viewers in 60million+ households, and was a massive success for the broadcaster. However, Turki Alalshikh swooped in at the last second and made a monstrous four-fight deal that set up Alvarez for a series of mega paydays.

Instead, Paul has moved on to fighting Alvarez’s former world championship opponent Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. After Alvarez faces Crawford in September, he is still locked in for two more Saudi Arabian dates next year.
