Chris Davies has confirmed Tomoki Iwata suffered a hip injury in Birmingham City’s 2-0 win at Oxford United.

The former Celtic man, who has seamlessly adapted from central midfield to right back, was withdrawn 65 minutes into the game at the Kassam Stadium.

He was replaced by Bright Osayi-Samuel who made his first Blues appearance since December 9, having been away at the Africa Cup of Nations for a month.

Until he went off Iwata had played every minute of the last 11 Championship matches but Blues must now assess his fitness.

Speaking after the match Davies said: “Tomoki has got quite a nasty bang on to his bone in the hip – it has spasmed up a little bit. I would be hopeful that’s not a long-term problem but we will have to see tomorrow.”

Osayi-Samuel is the obvious replacement if Iwata is unable to recover in time for next weekend’s home clash with Leicester City. With Ethan Laird also sidelined Davies could well find himself down to just two full backs one again as Kai Wagner ploughs on at left back.
