Liverpool in pole position for Jeremy Jacquet
We heard of talks between Liverpool and Rennes for the young centre-back, but it was thought that Chelsea were firmly in the lead.
Now though, a report from Footmercato’s Santi Aouna claims it’s the Reds who are favourites to sign him. He claims Liverpool are in ‘pole position’ for Jacquet, leaving Chelsea and other suitors behind.
Aouna reveals that Jacquet has said yes to the move, and a ‘definitive agreement’ is expected in the ‘next few hours’.
Shortly after this news emerged, Ben Jacobs revealed on X that a fee of ‘£55m + £5m’ is on the table, and talks are ‘advancing’.

If these reports have it right it would be a hefty investment for a defender, but for one who is believed to be the future of the France back line. Along with Giovanni Leoni, it would secure Liverpool’s defence for the next decade.
There is one problem…
Rennes unlikely to let Jeremy Jacquet leave until the summer
It’s pretty much guaranteed that Jacquet’s near future lies away from Rennes, but the Ligue 1 side want to keep their star centre-back for the rest of the season.
With the amount of holes in Arne Slot’s squad right now, this doesn’t really help at all.
If this deal is reached, it doesn’t mean Liverpool shouldn’t be going after a defender who can make an impact right away.

After Liverpool missed out on Lutsharel Geertruida, the fans are frustrated with how inefficient we have been in the market. It’s a far cry from the windows of the Klopp era, and that’s not the fault of Slot.
That makes it extra important that Liverpool get Jacquet over the line. Losing out on another high-profile transfer to a Premier League rival would just leave a sour taste.
