KUALA LUMPUR: A sum of RM200mil will be allocated to improve the internet connectivity at Mara Institute of Education (IPMa).
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic) said the fund would be channelled through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Of the total fund, RM150mil had been approved earlier.
“I requested that we allocate an additional RM50mil to bring the total to RM200mil to resolve the internet issues at IPMa campuses,” he said at the Amazing Syawal Hari Raya Aidil Fitri event at Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia here on Thursday (April 10).
Fahmi said improved internet accessibility must be aligned with user awareness, urging students to use the facility responsibly and avoid falling into criminal activity.
“I feel conflicted. We are working hard to solve internet issues to ensure it is fast and affordable but if some people misuse it for criminal activity or to spread slander, I don’t want this high-speed, quality internet service to be misused.
“I hope Mara can work together with the ministry and MCMC to promote safe internet,” he added.
On January, Fahmi said his ministry, through MCMC, was set to invest over RM600mil to improve WiFi access at all public universities across the country.
This project is expected to be completed by year-end, he said.
