Hollyoaks introduced a huge new storyline involving Rex Gallagher tonight (2 February) as he grieves the loss of Grace Black.
Rex lost his mother in scenes that aired last year, in which she was shot by her sister Clare Devine.
As well as being left reeling by Grace’s tragic death, Rex has desperately tried to make amends for the horror they both subjected Hollyoaks residents to, including teens Frankie Osborne, Dillon Ray, and Vicky Grant.
Rex is set to give the inheritance he received following Grace’s death to the teens, but he is still desperately working through the loss.
Recent scenes have seen Rex looking at his mother’s clothes in private, with tonight’s episode seeing him take his interest one step further.

It began when Dillon revealed to Rex that he had visited Lucas while awaiting trial, enraging both Rex and Frankie.
Lucas is currently locked up as part of the soap’s child-to-parent abuse storyline, which saw him react furiously over his ex-boyfriend Dillon sleeping with his dad Ste Hay.
Rex also wants to convince Ste to visit his son and to plead guilty, but Ste is reluctant to face his son after what he has been through, despite both Rex and Dillon’s insistence.

Later, Rex calls Frankie, Vicky, and Dillon to the garage and tells them that he’s going to give them Grace’s inheritance money, to which they are delighted.
The episode ends with Rex applying Grace’s lipstick in the mirror, while speaking to Grace in his mind, saying he hopes he has made her happy, too, with his decision to give the money to the teens.
He repeats the word “happy” to himself while looking at the red lipstick in the mirror. However, Rex still appears visibly shaken and keeps his experimentation behind closed doors – but for how long?
Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.
Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
