Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Hollyoaks’ Ste Hay decides to take his relationship to the next level next week, when he proposes to unsuspecting Rex Gallagher. Ste and Rex’s relationship has survived many curveballs recently, including Ste’s fling with his son’s ex-boyfriend Dillon, and the return of Ste’s supposedly dead husband James.
While Rex is still hiding a secret of his own, Ste is confident that his current partner is the one, having even turned down James in order to focus on his romance with Rex. In an exclusive chat with us at Inside Soap, Kieron Richardson, who plays Ste, explains why his character pops the question…
“Let’s not be shy, Ste is a sucker for a wedding!” he laughs. “He thinks that love equals marriage, living together and raising kids – though we all know that Ste isn’t the best dad and does make some terrible choices.
“All he’s ever wanted is that happy family unit because he never had that growing up. He really does love Rex, and he thinks this is his way to get him.”

However, Ste really doesn’t pick the right moment, as Rex is about to leave with Froggy to scatter the ashes of his late mum Grace, so he is blindsided by this declaration of love and he doesn’t immediately give an answer.
“It’s the wrong timing,” Kieron explains. “Rex is literally holding Grace’s ashes, but Ste is unaware of that, I think he just thinks it’s some kind of weird tin!
“He just gets down on one knee and blurts it out in front of Rex’s grandad. It’s left on a bit of a cliffhanger of whether Rex accepts the proposal, or he walks away…”

Rex leaves Ste hanging, and he and Froggy head to a clifftop by the sea to say a proper goodbye to Grace. As they discuss memories, Froggy wonders whether Rex will say yes to Ste – but would Kieron like to see his alter ego get wed once again?
“I think it would be nice to see a bit of happiness for Ste, and a bit of light relief for the entire family,” he says.
“I would like to see a wedding, but as all of Ste’s weddings have ended in disaster, I’m guessing something big could happen – maybe James could turn up to try and stop the wedding, or maybe someone else will die?”
