A busy road in Cheadle village has reopened after a gas leak sparked travel disruption last week.
Manchester Road heading towards Parrs Wood and Didsbury had been closed since January 26. Gas company Cadent has confirmed workers had been responding to a gas leak.
As one of only two routes from the area into south Manchester, the road closure caused severe traffic disruption, meaning drivers were unable to turn from High Street or Stockport Road onto Manchester Road.
The closure forced many motorists heading north onto the A34 and caused bus services to be diverted. Manchester Road reopened on Monday (February 2) after ‘essential repairs’ to a gas main were completed, Cadent has confirmed.
A spokesperson for Cadent said: “We appreciate this was disruptive and thank everyone for their patience while we completed this safety-critical work.
“We responded to a report of a smell of gas which we traced to a leak on a gas main under Manchester Road. We took immediate actions to keep everyone safe and to keep gas flowing to local homes, before beginning the essential repairs early last week.
“Unfortunately, due to the location of the gas main under the road, we had to close a lane of Manchester Road while we did this, meaning you were unable to turn from High Street or Stockport Road onto Manchester Road. A diversion route was signposted.
“An incident like this is a reminder to act immediately if you smell gas, or notice damage to gas pipes. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999*, day or night. It is a good idea to save the number into your phone, so it is there if you ever need it.”
The road closure came as Stockport Council began roadworks less than a mile away. Carriageway drainage and resurfacing works began on Stockport Road on January 30 on the A560 Stockport Road between Councillor Lane and Roscoes Roundabout.
The works are expected to take around a week to complete, and the road is set to be closed from 8pm to 5am nightly. The council say they have liaised with bus service providers to make arrangements to services affected by the works.
