De Ligt has picked up a knock
Manchester United could be left sweating on the fitness of Matthijs de Ligt after the defender had to be taken off in the first half of their Premier League clash with Brentford.
United will face Athletic Bilbao in the second leg of their Europa League semi final on Thursday. Ruben Amorim’s side are 3-0 up following the first leg but know there is still work to be done to reach the Europa League final on May 21.
The game sandwiched between their two semi final clashes with Athletic Bilbao was a trip to Brentford. De Ligt started the game at the Gtech Community Stadium having played 25 minutes of the victory over Athletic Bilbao following his return from injury, but his afternoon’s work was over after just 35 minutes.
The Dutchman entered into a 50-50 challenge with Yoane Wissa before signalling that he had picked up a knock. He had to be replaced by Harry Maguire and it is unclear whether he will be available for Thursday’s semi final second leg.
United were trailing 2-1 at the time of the incident. Mason Mount had put United ahead early on with a cool finish following Alejandro Garnacho’s cross.
Mikkel Damsgaard’s effort deflected off Luke Shaw and into the back of the net to hand the visitors an equaliser shortly before the half hour mark and Kevin Schade put Thomas Frank’s side ahead just six minutes later.
