A man has died days after he was assaulted in the street. At around 1.30am on Sunday, February 1, Merseyside Police received a report of a disagreement which resulted in a group of people assaulting two men on Oakfield Road in Anfield before fleeing the scene.

It’s reported that one of the victims, a 53-year-old man, had swelling to his face while a 54-year-old man suffered head and rib injuries. Merseyside Police officers attended the scene and the two men declined medical attention.

After the incident, the 54-year-old man returned home to Scarborough where he died on Tuesday morning, February 3, following a medical episode, police said. A post-mortem will take place to establish his cause of death.

CCTV and witness enquiries are in the process of being carried out and police are now appealing for anyone who saw the incident or drivers who were in the area to come forward to police.

A spokesperson from police said they believe two taxi drivers pulled over during the incident and a member of the public was there during the incident.

That person may also have a recording on their phone of the incident.

North Yorkshire Police is leading on the investigation but Merseyside Police continue to assist.

Detective Inspector Natalie Charlesworth said: “First and foremost our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the man who has died.

“We are appealing for anyone with information on the assault to please come forward to assist the investigation.

“North Yorkshire Police are leading the investigation into his death, we are keeping an open mind until we know the cause of death, and are conducting extensive enquiries so his family can get answers.

“We are aware that people were in the area and may have witnessed the incident and we urge them to please contact us as soon possible.

“We also very keen to speak to the two taxi drivers and the member of the public to please contact us as a matter of urgency.”
