History is not on Newcastle United’s side.
No team have ever reached a Carabao Cup final after losing
the first leg at home by two or more goals.
That’s not all.
The holders have only ever beaten Manchester City once at the Etihad.
They have not even scored there in seven and a half years.
But a number of psychological barriers have been broken since Eddie Howe took charge in 2021.
There have been memorable wins at the Emirates, Old Trafford
and, even, Wembley in that time.
This is the toughest test yet, though, particularly when this
travel sick side have so often floundered away from home this season.
So the first goal tonight is absolutely crucial.
“We
have to believe we’ve got the players that can go to any stadium in the world
and perform and score goals,” said Howe.
