A man’s body was tragically pulled from the River Irwell on Sunday evening (May 4) following a concern for welfare report.

Witnesses reported seeing ‘at least ten police cars’ and fire engines at the scene near Nuttall Lane, off Bolton Street in the Ramsbottom area.

The Manchester Evening News understands that police and paramedics were called to reports of the concern for welfare of a man.

A cordon was put in place at the bottom of the lane, in an area of woodland, after the body of a man was recovered from the water. No further details have been confirmed.

Tactical Aid vehicles were also seen nearby with a footbridge over the River Irwell also taped off by officers at the scene on Sunday.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were also called to assist police at the scene. A number of fire engines were in attendance.

Formal identification is yet to take place, with police enquiries continuing into the man’s death. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Police have been approached for a comment.
