A grieving mum has spoken lovingly of her gentle and “hilarious” son who has died unexpectedly. Kieran McCrave was only 28 when he was pronounced dead by paramedics in the early hours of Saturday, April 5.

Kieran’s mum, Claire Martin, said her son worked as a chef in Manchester city centre and lived between her home in Fallowfield and his dad’s place in Blackley. On Thursday, April 3, Claire said Kieran had left her house and set off back to his dad’s.

Getting off the tram, he spotted his uncle near North Manchester Hospital. Claire said it was while he was chatting to his uncle that Kieran had fallen off a brick wall and banged his head.

Claire said: “He’d just left my house and he was getting off the tram and he seen his uncle.

“He went to run up a wall but he fell and smacked his head off the wall and the pavement.”

Despite the knock, Claire said Kieran picked himself up and “said he was fine”. He returned to his dad’s house and spent the rest of Thursday and Friday with his dad and younger brother.

However, in the early hours of Saturday morning, Kieran’s younger brother tried to wake him but got no response.

“His brother started CPR on him and rang an ambulance straight away,” Claire said.

Tragically, Kieran was found to have died in his sleep. “The ambulance man said he’s been gone a good couple of hours,” Claire added.

“He died of a bleed on the brain but he didn’t even complain of a headache.”

‘Everyone loved him. He had a beautiful soul’

A scan later performed on Kieran revealed a bleed on the brain had been the likely cause of his death. Following his sudden death, Claire said she was “not coping well,” but added, “Because I’ve got other children, I’ve got to be strong for them as well.”

She continued: “He was full of life, he really was. He lived one day to the next, just living his life.

“He was hilarious – he had the room laughing. He was just funny all the time.

“He was harmless, he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

“Everyone loved him. He had a beautiful soul.”

Following Kieran’s death, Claire has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to try and pay for her son’s funeral. She also wants to raise awareness around head trauma, urging people still to visit the hospital after a knock to the head “even if you’re feeling well.”

After Claire posted a photo of Kieran on her Facebook profile, friends commented to express their condolences and remember the popular 28-year-old.

Dale Martin posted: “There will never be anyone like you. I love you big man more than you’d ever know! Forever 28”.

James Church posted: “So many memories I will cherish forever – going to miss you big man, till we meet again”.

While Michelle Foster posted: “RIP kieron. Can’t believe it x”.
