People living in Sheffield and Leeds were puzzled after hearing a strange ‘roar’ and a sound like ‘revving’ coming from the sky tonight, which also left dogs scared

People in two UK cities heard a “weird rumbling” sound tonight, with one resident saying it sent their dog “mad”.
The bizarre “roar” was reported in both Leeds and Sheffield at around 7.50pm on Monday evening, and left people looking to the sky – but there was nothing that could be seen to explain it. And many others also took to social media to share their experiences and to try and figure out what was happening.
Lynsey Irwin posted on Facebook saying: “Did anyone hear a weird rumbling sound in Woodhouse a few minutes ago?” Around 50 people replied to her post and confirmed that others in the Sheffield and Leeds areas heard the noise.

Ciara wrote: “Heard it over Gleadless.” Jaqui wrote: “Yes in Owlthorpe.” Richard wrote: “I heard two rumbles.”
While Michelle Berry added: “It sounded like a motorbike or loud car. I heard revving when I opened my door to see what it was but must not have been after reading the comments.”
Debbie added: “I’m in Woodhouse, I never heard anything – but the dog was going mad so must have been.”
And it was Flightradar24 which had the answer – as three United States Air Force tanker planes were tracked heading south, across the south-west side of Leeds and over Sheffield at the same time, reports YorkshireLive.
These ‘flying gas stations’ are essential for global power projection, allowing fighters and bombers to reach any target worldwide without landing, but they also make a much louder noise than normal planes. The USAF fleet consists of approximately 500 to 600 of the so-called ‘tanker planes’.
But while this noise was identified without too much difficulty, there is also a strange humming sound that is driving locals in a UK town “crazy” – and the council says it has “drawn a blank” on the cause.
North East Lincolnshire Council has said that we may never know what is behind the noise that has been going on for years in Immingham. And one resident has claimed the sound is getting louder.
Theories suggest it could be coming from a nearby factory, wind farms or even underground cables. It has even led one resident, Chloe Eccles, who has been based in Immingham for six years, to consider moving away as she can’t get away from the noise.
“As the years have gone on I’ve carried on hearing it and I thought I was crazy but other people can hear it too… especially in the last couple of months, it’s got really loud,” she said. “There’s nothing that blocks it out, it’s constant.”
