French President Emmanuel Macron returned to his “Made in Europe” push on the eve of a key European Union meeting, putting him at odds with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over how best to tackle Europe’s economic woes.

Speaking to a gathering of business leaders in the Belgian port city of Antwerp, Macron urged European countries to prioritize local resources in strategic sectors such as chemicals, chips and tech.

“If you want to preserve jobs in this continent, if you want to preserve our social models, if you want to speak about semiconductors, chemical industry, etc, etc, we have to preserve and define, by design, European content,” he said in his speech.
