The Jet2 plane, which departed from Edinburgh Airport, issued a 700 squawk code on Monday morning.

The LS3915 flight, which was due to arrive in Rome later this morning, took off at around 6.50am after it was initially due to leave the airport at 6.15am.

However, around 30 minutes into the journey, the pilot declared the emergency.

The plane was diverted to Birmingham Airport at around 7.30am.

The plane starts to pass Birmingham Airport but u-turns, looping around it in the sky.

It then landed safely at the airport at around 7.40am.

The nature of the on-board emergency is currently unknown.

It is also unclear when passengers will be able to resume their journeys.
