Sheila’s Island at the King’s Arms is a wonderfully funny production of Tim Firth’s modern comedy, where corporate facades crumble as quickly as the cast’s hope of rescue.
Directed with confidence by Colin Connor, this intimate staging almost immediately invites the audience right into the muddy, fog-drenched world of four office colleagues stranded on an island after a team-building disaster.

The ensemble is led by Emma Laidlaw as the optimistic but increasingly frazzled Sheila, whose earnest attempts to lead Team C keep the action rolling; Laidlaw’s performance balances heart and humour throughout.
Jenny Jordan-O’Neill brings sharp comic timing and biting sarcasm to Denise, whose cynicism sparks some of the play’s funniest and most revealing moments.
As Julie, Lisa Connor delivers a delightful mix of both over-preparedness and vulnerability, turning every precious item in her rucksack into both a laugh and a revelation. Fiona Boylan completes the quartet with a soulful, quirky portrayal of Fay, whose gentle spirit and oddball observations provide emotional warmth amid the chaos.
Chemistry among the actors
The chemistry among the four actors is terrific, their interactions capturing both the absurdity of corporate life and the raw, surprising truths that emerge when survival becomes the only priority. Visually modest but cleverly designed, the set evokes the isolation of the island while allowing the actors to fully showcase Firth’s witty dialogue and comedic pacing.
What stands out most is the play’s blend of smart humour with genuine insight into human relationships. Amid the laughs are moments of real vulnerability that elevate the piece beyond mere farce.
Beneath the comedy
Beneath the comedy lies a thoughtful commentary on how people present themselves in professional settings versus who they truly are. Sheila’s Island is a brilliantly entertaining night of theatre, it’s engaging, thought-provoking and uproariously funny.
The show is running at the Kings Arms pub in Salford until 21st February.
