The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics are in full swing, and it’s another busy day in Italy, with more medals up for grabs on Saturday. Here are the top stories we’re watching today:

Jordan Stolz breaks Olympic record, wins second gold in 500 meters

Stolz is the future of U.S. speedskating. He’s also the man of the moment. The 21-year-old Kewaskum, Wisconsin, native won his second gold in the second of his four events at this year’s Games, taking first place in the 500 meters with an Olympic record 33.77. Stolz’s next chance to add to his medal collection is Thursday, in the men’s 1500 meters, and then next weekend in the mass start.

Team USA men’s hockey takes on Denmark as group play continues (3:10 p.m. ET)

The Americans’ 5-1 victory over Latvia in the teams’ opening match of group play was far closer than the score suggests — at least initially. Next up in Group C for Team USA is a Denmark squad that dropped its group-play opener to Germany 3-1. Oscar Fisker Mølgaard, who made his NHL debut with the Seattle Kraken earlier this season, scored the Danes’ lone goal in that matchup. Without current NHL blueliners, the Danish are in for a tall task defending a loaded American offense.

Cory Thiesse, U.S. women’s curling riding high after monumental win over Canada (1:05 p.m. ET)

U.S. curling had something to celebrate on Friday, as the American women defeated Canada for the first time since women’s curling was introduced to the Olympics in 1998. She and her teammates will face off against 0-2 Japan on Saturday.

Denmark took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Nick Oleson with 1:40 played in the first period.

However, the U.S. tied the score nearly two minutes later with Matt Boldy getting his own rebound then scoring on a wraparound goal.

Jordan Stolz won his second gold medal of the Milan Cortina Olympics with a victory in Saturday’s men’s 500m.

The 21-year-old Wisconsin native set an Olympic record with a time of 33.77, edging Jenning de Boo (33.88) of the Netherlands, who ended up with a silver medal.

Stolz is now halfway to securing the most speedskating gold medals at one Olympics since fellow Wisconsin native Eric Heiden won a mind-blowing five at the 1980 Lake Placid Games. Still remaining for Stolz are the 1,500m on Thursday and the chaotic, unpredictable mass start event two days later.

The U.S. men’s curling team improved to 2-2 with an 8-6 win over Germany on Saturday.

The Americans stormed out to a big, early lead with a four in the first end. That advantage increased to 6-2 after the fourth end, but the Germans slowly crawled back with four points over the next four ends to cut the U.S. lead to one.

Skip Danny Casper added one in the ninth end and then prevented the Germans from having a chance to tie in the 10th.

The U.S. men continue round-robin play on Sunday with matches against Sweden (3:05 a.m. ET) and Norway (1:05 p.m. ET).

Lucas Pinheiro Braathen became the first South American to win a Winter Olympics medal after he earned gold during Saturday’s men’s giant slalom.

The 25-year-old Pinheiro Braathen, who is ranked second in the world in slalom and giant slalom, recorded a combined time of 2:25.00, 0.58 better than 2022 gold medalist Marco Odermatt to win the event.

The 29-year-old Kauf picked up her third career Olympic silver medal on Saturday in the duo moguls, adding to silver won on Wednesday in the moguls competition and the 2022 Beijing Games.

Fellow American Liz Lemley took home bronze in the duo moguls, three days after securing her first career gold medal.

American Jaelin Kauf added a second silver medal to her Olympic haul in a dramatic women’s dual moguls event, while individual moguls gold medalist Elizabeth Lemley added a bronze.

Kauf lost the gold medal final to Australia’s Jakara Anthony, the pre-Olympic favorite who earned revenge after her final run in individual moguls went awry earlier this week. Kauf was working on a gold-medal run until a tiny bobble midway down the course caused her left ski to slip out for a split second. That ultimately allowed the chasing Anthony to catch up, win on time and on style.

Dual moguls, a new event to the Olympics this this year, matches skiers in a series of head-to-head races where they advance in a single elimination bracket until a winner emerges. Time isn’t the only factor, however, as judges also score turns and tricks just as they would in the regular moguls format.

Things got wild in the semifinals. Facing France’s Perrine Laffont, Kauf advanced on a technicality as both skiers crashed. But Laffont, who got stuck trying to keep her balance after landing her first trick, had to ski the wrong way around a gate, which essentially resulted in a disqualification.

It’s reached a point where the U.S. isn’t just playing for an Olympic gold medal anymore. The Americans are two victories away from staking their claim as the best women’s hockey team their country has ever produced.

Outshooting Italy 51-6 was the most savage example yet of the team’s tournament-long dominance. The Americans have steamrolled to the semifinals by outscoring their first five opponents 26-1 and outshooting them 225-72.
