Earlier this month, Sheffield Wednesday allowed Yan Valery to join Young Boys on loan until the end of the season.
The Tunisia international made his debut for Young Boys when he came off the bench in their defeat to FC St. Gallen on February 11th.
Last weekend, the Sheffield Wednesday man played the full 90 minutes in their 6-1 win over FC Winterthur and contributed two assists.
Friday’s edition of Blick looks at how the right-back can help the Swiss club and discusses his future beyond this season.
Why Owls sanctioned loan move
Valery featured regularly under Henrik Pedersen and has played 23 Championship matches for the Owls this season.
The English club have struggled financially and are in the process of finding a new owner.
Blick claim Valery is one of Sheffield Wednesday’s top earners and his exit will at least allow them to reduce part of his salary.
The newspaper believe the move also benefits him sporting wise and would improve his chances of making it to the World Cup. Whether that’s the case remains to be seen.
Good start for Sheffield Wednesday loanee
He contributed two assists in their last win, and credited his new teammates for helping him settle in.
“The team gave me a fantastic welcome. That made my first game so much easier. The two assists were just a bonus,” he said.
Prior to joining Sheffield Wednesday, the fullback had spells in England with Southampton. During his time with at St Mary’s, the Saints sent him on loan to Birmingham City. There’s belief his previous difficult experience in England should now help Young Boys.
“I learned that in England. But I’ve known it since I was a child. Later, I also experienced relegation battles on the island,” Valery explained.
As things stand, the Tunisian will have to return to Sheffield Wednesday after his loan spell. The Owls are bottom of the table, and it’s unlikely he’d play in League One next season.
This would provide Young Boys an opportunity to retain him beyond this season. However, Blick warns that if he continues to shine, there could be more clubs lining up to sign him.
The newspaper suggest the price could rise if ‘powerful Championship clubs make serious offers’.
