The Menier Chocolate Factory in London has announced initial casting for its new production of Peter Shaffer’s Equus.
Acclaimed actor Toby Stephens is set to play the role of Dr. Martin Dysart in Lindsay Posner’s London revival.
Equus is playing at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 18 May to 27 June 2026.
Toby Stephens is the youngest son of acting legends Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Robert Stephens, and recently starred in the RSC’s Wendy and Peter Pan at the Barbican Theatre. He has a long association with the RSC, the National Theatre, and starring in the West End.
His screen credits include Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Camomile Lawn, and Die Another Day.
Further casting for Equus is to be announced.
Peter Shaffer’s Equus is considered a modern classic, and joins his award-winning body of work which includes Five Finger Exercise, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Amadeus and Lettice and Lovage.
What is Equus about? Psychiatrist Martin Dysart is set the challenge of a lifetime when faced with a 17-year-old boy who has blinded six horses. As Dysart delves into the psyche of his young patient, Alan Strang, to search for the answers, at the same time he questions whether the cure is more dangerous than the crime.
Equus is a co-production with Theatre Royal Bath, and plays there from 13 to 25 July.
The creative team will also include Paul Farnsworth (Set and Costume Design); Paul Pyant (Lighting Design); Adam Cork (Composer and Sound Design); and James Cousins (Movement Director).
