The Washington Commanders will host at game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London this season, the NFL announced on Wednesday. Their opponent and the date of the game will be revealed in May, when the league releases the full 2026 schedule.

The Athletic reported in November that the Commanders would be the designated home team in their second international game in as many seasons, following their loss to the Miami Dolphins at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Week 11 last year.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will also play two games in London: one at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and another at Wembley Stadium, part of the Jaguars’ multi-year commitment to play games in the United Kingdom. Jacksonville has played 14 regular-season games in London since 2013.

The Commanders’ London game will come a decade after Washington first competed abroad — in London no less — and played the Cincinnati Bengals to a 27-27 tie in front of a sold-out crowd at Wembley Stadium.

“The NFL has obviously demonstrated that there is a market for this,” Commanders president Mark Clouse said shortly after the team’s return from Madrid last year. “… So, I see it both as a great fan opportunity, but I also see it as a really good business opportunity for the franchise as well.”

The NFL’s push for global expansion will reach new heights this season as it stages a record nine regular-season games overseas, including three in London. The league earlier announced that the Los Angeles Rams will host the NFL’s first game in Melbourne, against the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers will also play a game in Mexico City, the Dallas Cowboys will play in Rio de Janeiro, the New Orleans Saints will host the NFL’s inaugural game in Paris, the Lions will have a game in Munich and another to-be-announced game will be played in Madrid.

“It’s the ambition we have to be a global sport,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in San Jose during the week of Super Bowl LX. “But it’s also the demand we’re having. We’re hearing from cities that want to host these games and really want to get more American football.”

Last season, six of the NFL’s seven international games aired on NFL Network and drew an average of 6.2 million viewers, up 32 percent from the network’s international slate in 2024. The Commanders’ loss in Madrid was one of the network’s five most-watched international games, averaging 5.9 million viewers.

Goodell has said that his hope is that the NFL plays 16 international games a season, with all 32 teams participating in one each year. During an interview with Westwood One earlier this month, he also said it’s “very possible someday” that the NFL expands to have an international team.

“I think as far as teams are concerned, at some point, if our international growth continues the way it is, I can see international growth on an international basis,” Goodell added. “Undoubtedly, even today, I think there are cities out there that could support an NFL team and we’re at the early stages. So, you know, I don’t take international expansion off the table.”
