Up and down the country, there are hundreds upon hundreds of cafés that serve up delicious coffee and various other hot and cold drinks. While everyone will have their own local favourite coffee shop, the best in Scotland were recently named on a prestigious guide.
As reported by the Daily Record, The Best Coffee Shops UK shared a list of the 44 best coffee shops in the UK. Among the nine Scottish cafés that are featured on the list is Mossgiel Coffee House in the East Ayrshire town of Stewarton, which is around 20 miles out of Glasgow.
Mossgiel Coffee House is an organic artisan coffee house and bakery that specialises in sustainability and ethically sourced ingredients. It makes use of fresh organic milk from its very own cows, while its website states that it ensures “every cup of coffee, crumbly pastry and plate of goodness supports a better food system”.
Mossgiel Coffee House offers organic blend coffee by Dear Green Coffee Roasters, with cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites, Americanos, macchiatos, and more available. Other drinks include tea, regular and specialist hot chocolate, and a wide range of cold and soft drinks.
The café also offers an extensive food menu, which includes options such as eggs benedict, filled rolls, and toasted croissants. Customers can also order a farmhouse stack that comes with square sausage, bacon, tattie scone, two slices of toasted organic bread, pancake, baked beans, black pudding or haggis, and poached or scrambled egg.
There are also sandwiches and toasties available for those looking for a lighter bite, which are also served on Mossgiel Coffee House’s organic farmhouse bread. Options include tuna melt, coronation chicken, cheddar, ham, and chutney, and cheddar, haggis, and sweet chilli.

Additionally, Mossgiel Coffee House also offers an afternoon tea that is priced at £21.95 per person, or £25 for two glasses of Prosecco. The afternoon tea is comprised of savoury fillings sandwiched between organic farmhouse bread and fresh croissants, farmhouse scones with Scottish jam and Mossgiel organic cream, and homemade traybakes.
Writing on its Instagram page, Mossgiel Coffee House shared: “We’re incredibly proud to have been named among the UK’s best coffee shops! A proper pinch-us moment and something we’re really thankful for.
“What makes it even better is seeing so many brilliant cafes we admire on the list too. Five fellow Mossgiel Milk stockists made it alongside us, which says a lot about the quality and care that goes into specialty coffee.
“Seeing so many Scottish cafes represented shows just how strong and supportive the coffee community here really is. Huge thanks to everyone who supports us day in, day out. We’re very grateful to be part of it all.”
As well as being named one of the best cafés in Scotland and the UK, the Mossgiel Coffee House has also earned rave feedback from the public. On Google, the coffee shop has an average rating of 4.7 out of five based on 166 customer reviews.
One visitor posted: “First time there with my husband and it certainly won’t be the last. A warm welcome. Service was second to none and with a smile.
“Coffee delicious. We had breakfast rolls which we both enjoyed. Coffees and cakes after. Highly recommend.”
A second shared: “Mossgiel is exactly the standard of cafe/coffee house I’d expect to find in Glasgow or Edinburgh, except it isn’t and that makes it an even better find. Knowledgeable, friendly and attentive staff. Excellent menu that ticks all the right boxes, in choice and quality.”
