Commuters are being reminded of closures on a major Bristol route this week. A planned closure on the A4 Portway has been moved forward by one night as part of Bristol City Council’s work to improve the bus entrance to Portway Park & Ride.

The busy road will be closed overnight as of today (Tuesday, May 6) from 9.30pm until 5.30am, between its junctions with West Town Road and Barrowhill Road. The same stretch will be closed during the same hours on the evening of Wednesday, May 7.

The £2 million project to improve the Portway Park & Ride bus entrance, located on the A4 in Shirehampton, began in February. The bus junction is being widened and altered during the nine-month project to allow more bus services to stop there when travelling to and from the northwest of the city.

The 9 service (Brislington Park & Ride to Portway Park & Ride), which already serves the park and ride, could also be developed and improve connectivity from the city centre to Avonmouth. Four new services could also stop at the site once the work is complete:

  • 3 (city centre to Cribbs Causeway)
  • 4 (city centre to Cribbs Causeway)
  • 10 (Bristol Parkway to Severn Beach via Avonmouth and Southmead Hospital)
  • 11 (Bristol Parkway to Avonmouth via Southmead Hospital)

Temporary bus stops are in place for the number 9 during the project. Bristol City Council has advised drivers to follow the diversion route during this week’s night time closures.
