Armed police officers swarmed to a busy main road in Liverpool city centre this afternoon to carry out a raid. Merseyside Police was called to Dale Street in Liverpool’s city centre at around 3.30pm today, Tuesday, May 6 to carry out a search of a premises.
A spokesperson for the force told the ECHO: “Acting on information received earlier today, officers attended the apartment on Dale Street. Distraction devices were deployed as a precaution by the officers attending the address, where it was later established there were no people present.”
When the ECHO arrived at Dale Street this afternoon, one police Matrix vehicle and at least three armed police officers armed with submachine guns were spotted at New Oxford House. Two of the officers, with black masks covering their faces, stood outside the front entrance to the building to the left of the Brunch Bar.
A security alarm could be heard going off inside the building. One of the firearms officers told the ECHO there had been no shots fired and there was no threat to the wider public.

An image sent to the ECHO showed a much larger response earlier in the day, with at least five Matrix vehicles blocking the road.
In the picture a bus and other traffic has been held up while officers carried out the raid. The traffic was released shortly after and vehicles and pedestrians could freely use Dale Street.
The police spokesperson added: “Enquiries at the scene are continuing. We would like to thank local residents and visitors to the city centre for their patience and understanding during our initial response to the incident.”
