The cheapest petrol station in the country to fill up is in Liverpool, according to new data. Research from Tiger.co.uk, a fintech company, found Go Kirkdale on Brewster Street was the place to go to get the cheapest fuel.

Average forecourt prices at this petrol station sit at around 121.9p per litre. That’s nearly 12p cheaper than the national average, and a full tank for a typical family car costs around £67.05 in Liverpool – compared to over £73 in many other cities, according to Tiger.co.uk.

Following Liverpool, Wolverhampton had the second cheapest petrol station in the country. This was a TotalEnergies petrol station, with average forecourt prices of 123.6p.

Before the bank holiday weekend, it was found petrol prices dropped to a near four-year low. However, the RAC said it was “disappointing” the price drop was not even steeper, given cuts to oil prices.

The RAC said the average price of a litre of fuel at UK forecourts on Thursday, May 1 was 134.06p. That was the cheapest price since July 2021, when it was 133.9p.

It said believed wholesale costs being paid by retailers indicate the average price of both petrol and diesel should be 4p per litre lower. That would bring the average price of a litre of petrol down to 130p, and diesel down to 136p.

Ian Wilson, managing director and car insurance expert at Tiger.co.uk said: “It is fantastic news for motorists that the price of fuel at the pumps has fallen by more than 6p in the last two months. In real terms, this means the average cost of a full tank for a 55-litre family car is £73.61 – almost £3 less than at the start of March.

“This will take some of the pressure off Brits who have been squeezed by the rising cost of motoring, as well as soaring energy and grocery bills. Any opportunity to save money can make a big difference, and so the team at Tiger.co.uk have compiled this useful list of the most cost-effective cities to refuel your vehicle.

“It is important to remember that while motorway service stations may be more convenient when it comes to refuelling, you could be paying a significant mark-up compared to using supermarket or independent forecourts.

“That is why it pays to plan ahead and find out which locations offer the best value for money at the pumps. To help save even more money on fuel, there are several small and simple tweaks you can make to your driving habits.

“These include driving smoothly, so avoiding excessive acceleration and sudden braking – using cruise control if you have it is a great way to help maintain a constant speed.

“While it may be tempting to leave the air conditioning running in the warmer weather, it could increase your fuel consumption by as much as 10%, so it is best to use this sparingly.

“Also, making sure your tyres are fully inflated will help improve fuel efficiency, as will reducing the weight your vehicle is carrying and ensuring it is serviced regularly.”
