Marathon PS5 Response Remarkably Positive After String of Live Service Disasters 1 Image: Push Square

Marathon is getting a universally positive response on storefronts like the PS Store, proving fans are at least enjoying Bungie’s newest shooter.

Right now on Sony’s storefront, the game has a 4.77 rating based on 3k reviews. If we compare that to another recent live service shooter, the dying Highguard, it has a 3.1 rating – albeit based on 14k reviews.

It’s a similar story on Steam, where the extraction FPS has ‘Very Positive’ reviews so far, where Highguard is considered ‘Mixed’.

Obviously, many of you will recall Concord was largely panned by users, so this represents a much stronger foundation for Marathon to build off.

But of course, the game’s real success will be measured by its player retention, and it’s far too early to draw any conclusions about that. The game peaked with 88k concurrent players on Steam on launch day, and dipped down to about 30k overnight. We don’t have data for PlayStation or Xbox.

It’s a sturdy if unspectacular start, but the weekend will bring more data, and the coming months will give us our biggest indication of the game’s longevity.

For the record, we’ve decided to hold our review until the endgame mode Cryo Archive launches later in the month, but we’re looking forward to sharing our thoughts once we’ve seen everything the game has to offer.
