Pictures show a first glimpse of work underway to revamp two leisure centres in North London. Haringey Council has invested £900k to improve gym facilities at Park Road and Tottenham Green leisure centres after it took back control of both sites from external contractors in 2024.
Both gyms will be expanded to increase the number of total workout stations by 40 per cent, with borough residents able to benefit from new equipment, a redecorated interior and new spaces designed for wheelchair users and people with disabilities.
Haringey’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, Cllr Emily Arkell, said: I’m delighted to see that our residents will soon be able to benefit from these gym improvements and upgrades and it’s especially pleasing that we’re making our equipment more accessible and inclusive.

“Having inherited a backlog of maintenance issues and repair works when we brought this provision back in-house in October 2024, we’re continuing on our improvement journey to enhance the user experience and service for our residents. These improvement projects serve to further underline our commitment to ensure our leisure centre equipment is clean, safe and well-maintained for them to use.”
Each gym renovation project is expected to last for a four-week period, with the refurbishment at Tottenham Green beginning last Monday, February 23 and the works at Park Road starting on Monday, March 16.
It will take four weeks to install a new functional gym at Park Road Leisure Centre, with the work for that facility set to commence on Monday, March 9 The main gym at Park Road Leisure Centre will be closed on Thursday, March 12 to allow the equipment to be moved.

During improvement works, temporary gyms can be used at both sites while other facilities such as classes and swimming won’t be affected. Members can also use the gym facilities at either Broadwater Farm Community Centre or New River Leisure Centre at no extra cost for the duration of these improvement works.
