More than 2,600 people across Greater Manchester have signed a petition calling for the Government not to ban social media for under 16s.

Tonight, MPs have rejected a proposed ban on social media for under-16s, with the Commons voting 307 to 173, majority 134, against the age-limit.

However, a ban could still come in future after the Commons supported a Government bid to give additional powers to the Secretary of State.

A petition to Parliament has been signed by more than 62,500 people, calling for a ban not to be imposed. It states: “I think the government shouldn’t ban social media for under 16s. This is because for many young people social media is how they communicate with their friends. Some people view social media as a lifeline. A community, a supportive network. This is why I think the government shouldn’t ban it.”

The government responded late last week.

In Greater Manchester, the Parliamentary Constituency with the most signatories as of 9.30pm on Monday (March 9) is Manchester Central, with 150 signatures. Gorton and Denton had the second highest figure, at 140.

At the other end of the scale, Hazel Grove had the fewest signatories, at 69. You can see how your constituency ranks below.
