Police are continuing their investigation into a number of “hoax threats” sent to Merseyside schools. Merseyside Police said on Monday, March 9 it was investigating a series of threats made to schools across the region.
LIPA School in Liverpool city centre warned parents to stay away after threats were made. In a letter to parents, shared with the ECHO, LIPA school said it had been forced to close for the day on Monday, March 9, due to a threat to cause harm.
Chesterfield High School in Crosby also confirmed to parents that it implemented a “temporary lockdown procedure” in line with national policy. Writing to parents Chesterfield High continued to say the school liaised with Merseyside Police, which said the communications were thought to be a hoax.
Merseyside Police confirmed the threats were not believed to have been genuine and officers were investigating who sent the “malicious communications”.
The widely shared threats, emailed to a number of schools, have been signed off with the name of a Merseyside man, who is now living overseas, who previously served time in prison for hacking and fraud offences. There is currently no indication that the email has been sent by him.
A senior police officer also told the ECHO that investigators had not received any information which suggested there was a requirement for schools to close.
