Parking charges across nearly two dozen South Gloucestershire car parks will come into force later this month.

South Gloucestershire Council has announced that the introduction of charges for 22 council-owned car parks will go live on Monday, May 19.

Charges will apply between 8am and 6pm, Mondays to Saturdays, with parking remaining free on Sundays and Bank Holidays, excluding Park and Ride and train station car parks.

The local authority has said that at least ten per cent of spaces in short stay car parks where charging will be introduced will remain free for 30-minute stays.

Motorists will then be charged 70p for the first hour in short-stay car parks.

In short-stay car parks drivers will be charged £1.30 for up to two hours, £3 for up to three hours and stays up to four hours will now cost £5.

As there is no long stay car park in Hanham, stays of between two and four hours at Laburnum Road car park will cost £3.

Parking in long-stay car parks and spaces will cost £3 for the first four hours and £4 for four to six hours. Stays of more than six hours will be charged at £5.

Weekly season tickets will cost £20, a monthly ticket will be £75 and an annual ticket will cost £840.

There will also be a six-monthly ticket option that will cost £435.

Disabled Blue Badge holders will be able to park in any space for free, up to four hours. They will then be charged £1 for up to six hours and anything over six hours will cost £2. A weekly parking ticket will cost £8.

At Parkway North Park and Ride and Abbey Wood train station parking will cost £2.60 per calendar day Monday to Sunday (24 hours) including bank holidays. These car parks will remain free for valid Blue Badge holders.

Preparatory works are already underway in the affected car parks, and next week the council will install the cashless payment machines and main signage.

Drivers will be able to use the MiPermit app on their smart phones; ‘tap and go’ with their payment card or smartphones using the machines; and for those who don’t want to make a contactless payment with their card or phone, they can make a phone call and pay by card.

Monitoring of parking in surrounding streets will be carried out after the scheme has been introduced, and the council has said it plans to work with residents to identify the best ways to mitigate any changes to parking patterns locally.

South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for communities and local place, Cllr Sean Rhodes, said: “The scheme we are introducing is simple and relatively cheap compared to neighbouring authorities.

“It doesn’t apply to all car parks, but where it does apply, the money we bring in will help protect essential services into the future.

“I’ve no doubt there will be a period of adjustment for some drivers, but I expect that most car owners already have several parking apps on their smartphones and are used to paying for parking almost everywhere they go.”
