DP World has issued a tender notice for construction of the London Gateway – Second Rail Terminal Phase 2.

The £18M project at London Gateway Port in Stanford-le-Hope, includes the installation of an 850m long reinforced concrete crane rail beam with pre-cast concrete pile foundations and its associated mechanical chambers to allow Rail Mounted Gantry Crane (RMGC) operations within the new terminal.

London Gateway Port is the UK’s only deep-water port, located on the Thames, 45km from the London.

The work will also require track drainage walkways, cable routes and under track crossings for the new signalling, telecommunications and electrical plant equipment. The development represents a major development in increasing the port’s rail freight capacity and enhancing its operational resilience.

The announcement, which was posted on 17 March, said: “[The work includes] construction of new railway infrastructure to serve the second terminal including plain line track, and associated components in a phase installation sequence delivering five new sidings to compliment the two sidings already constructed during Phase 1/1A of the works, which are currently in operation.

“Installation and integration of 21 new switches and crossings (S&C) required to connect the new terminal to the existing rail network corridor as well as providing more route paths for trains entering and exiting the existing eastern rail terminal.”

DP World has emphasised the need for meticulous coordination with port operations and third-party stakeholders to minimise disruption during construction. The phased delivery approach, commencing in July for an anticipated 12 months, reflects the complexity of working within a live rail and port environment.

Upon completion, the enhanced rail terminal is expected to significantly boost containerised freight throughput capacity and flexibility, while reducing the environmental footprint through increased rail freight usage.

Interested parties must register their interest and respond to the tender by 13 April via the Oracle tendering platform, with participation subject to legal, financial, and technical capacity conditions outlined in the procurement documents.
