A maths teacher with an unblemished 20-year career was exposed as a thug when he turned violent on a staff day out at the races.
After downing 10 pints, Declan Sealy, 45, bit a bouncer – clamping down on his thumb for 20 seconds, only to let go when he was tear-gassed. He also attacked two police officers who had to the CS incapacitant spray to bring him under control, a professional conduct panel heard.
Sealy had previously had an ‘unblemished’ 20-year career as a teacher latterly at Dixons Brooklands Academy in the Baguley area of Wythenshawe. That ended after a staff day out at Chester Races on July 1, 2023.

He was handed a 26-week suspended prison sentence at Chester Magistrates’ Court in February 2024 after he was convicted of being drunk and disorderly, one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.
Sealy ‘admitted the alleged facts’ when he later appeared before a professional conduct panel of the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), the watchdog’s published decision reveals.
During the School’s investigation, Sealy admitted that one police officer had a cut to the knuckle and the other had a cut on his hand following an encounter with a bouncer who he had admitted he had bitten on his thumb for about 20 seconds until he was CS sprayed. The panel decided this was a ‘significant violent act’.
He also admitted he had also previously received two cautions, in 2003 and 2007, for drunk and disorderly behaviour, according to the TRA ruling. Sealy also confirmed the accuracy of a police report of the incident which said he had consumed 10 pints.
The ruling said: “Mr Sealy gave evidence that, on the day he committed the offence, he had been trying to monitor the level of alcohol he consumed, interspersing alcoholic drinks with soft drinks and ensuring he had something to eat. He since recognised that was not effective and a few weeks after his arrest took the decision to abstain from alcohol entirely. He confirmed that he has not consumed alcohol since.”

He said he ‘made a deliberate decision’ not to attend Alcoholics Anonymous as he did not consider that he had any dependency on alcohol, but instead, after speaking with his mother, chose to make a ‘declaration’ with Pioneer, a branch of the Catholic church, according to the judgment.
The panel heard a number of glowing testimonials to Sealy including that he was a ‘wonderful father’, that he was ‘dedicated to pupils’ and that he ‘feels embarrassed and ashamed’ of his convictions.
The panel originally decided that a ban on teaching was ‘not appropriate in this case’. However, the final decision-maker Stuart Blomfield said: “I have concluded that a prohibition order is proportionate and in the public interest in order to achieve the intended aims of a prohibition order.”
He concluded: “This means that Mr Declan Sealy is prohibited from teaching indefinitely and cannot teach in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth accommodation or children’s home in England.”
